US Constitution update draft

Here we can discuss and suggest changes needed in our US Constitution.

If we take a section or paragraph to a time we can determine if it is satisfactory or needs change.

Updating our US Constitution is necessary simply because it was written over 200 years ago and times have changed immensely. We no longer have to rely on the Poney Express to deliver messages, nor telegraph with short bursts of information. The reason “representatives” were necessary is because only in person meetings held far off in “capitols” provided the forum for deliberation. Not everyone could communicate with the National Congress, the State Legislature's and often not even local Community Government. Now we have the Internet, messaging with email and Instant Messaging (IM) and group discussions, There are Forums to post your information where others can comment and vote your Initiative up for further deliberation. We can accommodate huge numbers of people in this manner, various groups can plan together and submit their Initiatives to the General Assembly Forum where all can further discuss and deliberate.

Change is often scarey and sometimes difficult but always provides a satisfaction of a tough job completed. We need to update our family rules, budget, and question our own principles often. Certainly we need to do this with our National Government too.

Switzerland has had Initiative and Binding Referendum for Centuries. This allows the people to provide direction to their Parliament, or correct errors Parliament may make. The Swiss can change their Constitution at any time and keep an ongoing list of possible changes provided by the people. When a consensus is reached to make a change, a Referendum is held and if the people support the change it is implemented.

Obviously safeguards and procedures must be considered and written into the statue which would provide Initiative and Binding Referendum. If we had this now, we could have been making timely amendments as they were needed. As it is, we the people have no authority to make changes without going through a difficult process. We must develop a way to control our government becaue we are responsible for our Country.

Democracy demands that the people have authority over their government. In the US this was never provided for. We are a “Republic” but not a Democracy. Some democratic tools are offered such as “elections”, but the people themselves have no direct input into government.

It is time we have a democratic, republic. What do you think?
